Dear Community Friends,

Your community foundation is building strong communities and developing philanthropy for the benefit of the people in Cumberland County, NC.  It is our pleasure to provide this brief report of our work in the last year.

Donors from all walks of life with a variety of charitable interests continue to create charitable funds at the community foundation.  We wish to thank the founders and donors who have made this investment in our future.

New Funds from July 1, 2007 to December 15, 2008

In November 2008, we announced that we have reached our Investing in the Future goal of raising $6,000,000 in new Community Funds.  This will grow our ability to support the best projects in our community every year.  We thank all donors of gifts large and small who made this possible.  Special recognition goes to Barbara B. Richardson who chaired the effort for its first three years.

Investing in the Future goal of $6,000,000 reached

In November, we announced the Community Grants.  We hope that you will read about each one of these great programs and celebrate the good work going on in this community.  Thank you to the founders of Community Funds who make these grants possible.

Over $200,000 in grants awarded

We are very proud of our scholarship program and our work with students.  Attending college has become even more expensive, making these scholarships more important to students and their families.  Thank you to the donors and volunteer committee who make this possible.

Over $130,000 in scholarships awarded

Thanks to a generous grant and technical support from NCGives (a statewide funder), we have created two new giving circles.  This exciting work has allowed us to reach out and engage a broader audience in our work.

Giving Circles bring givers together for good.

We maintained our certification in compliance with National Standards for US Community Foundations and achieved the highest opinion from our audit firm, Haigh, Byrd & Lambert, LLP.

Financial Highlights for  Fiscal Year ending June 30, 2008

We thank our board members, volunteers and past directors for the oversight of our work and the stewardship of our service to the community.

This 2008 Annual Report is provided electronically for two reasons.  In 2008, we achieved certification through the GREEN BIZ program of Sustainable Sandhills.  We learned to be better stewards of natural resources and save money at the same time.  Also in 2008, the stock market took a serious tumble and we felt that the prudent action was to eliminate the expense of a written report to you this year.

Finally, in these tough economic times, we want to urge you to continue to support local charities that improve the quality of life in this community every day.   They need your help now, more than ever.  We look forward to working with you to make philanthropy and its benefits available to everyone.

Warm regards,

Samuel E. Short                                                       Mary M. Holmes
