For more than four decades the Epsilon Rho Lambda Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity has helped deserving youth in the Cumberland County, Fort Bragg/Pope Air Force Base area go to college by awarding scholarships. The chapter named its scholarship in honor of one of its members, Dr. George L. Butler, who had been a distinguished leader in the fraternity, civic affairs, business, the community and his profession. Dr. Butler was from Fayetteville and had a variety of jobs to include the U.S. Postal Service, the U.S. Army, a teacher and principal. His career path changed in 1955 when he became a dentist after graduating from the Howard University School of Dentistry. He practiced dentistry in Fayetteville until his passing on January 9, 1974. The fraternity created an endowment in 1986 for this scholarship based on their desire to improve life for the citizens in their community and to assist young men in acquiring the requisite skills necessary to become leaders locally, regionally and nationally. In 2004, the Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity brought the fund to Cumberland Community Foundation for ease of administration and stewardship. Over time, while remembering a devoted fraternity brother, members have generously built up the fund to help many students fulfill their dreams of attaining a brighter future.
