Vienna M. and John E. Balkcum

Charitable Endowment fund

In June 2003, CCF received the largest unrestricted gift ($1,522,000) in the Foundation's history from the estates of John and Vienna Balkcum. In 1982, the Balkcums read an article in The Fayetteville Observer about Dr. Lucile Hutaff's gift that created Cumberland Community Foundation. They were so inspired that they re-wrote their wills a few weeks later to ensure that they "gave back" to the community in similar way. After more than sixty years of marriage, they died within 6 days of each other. Their gift was unrestricted. After talking to their friends and advisors, the Foundation designed a grant program that will reflect their values and priorities. We feel honored by the Balkcums' generous gift and we will make sure that they make a lasting difference through the endowment fund created at Cumberland Community Foundation in their honor.
