Steven R. Elrod Memorial Scholarship

Steven Ray Elrod demonstrated personal character, responsibility and integrity, core values stressed by his family.  These were demonstrated in many ways throughout his life and notably in his decision to join the U. S. Army.  He was awarded the Bronze Star for Valor for thwarting a well emplaced enemy ambush that would have devastated his unit’s entire convoy in May of 2007.  Sadly, he lost his life on September 10, 2007 in Baghdad, Iraq, just a few months before he was due to return home.

His family created this scholarship at Cumberland Community Foundation to give something back to his high school, Massey Hill Classical High School, and to the community.  Steven would be proud to know that his memory is associated with providing college education assistance for others.  His life will be an inspiration to students who learn about him through the scholarship dedicated to his memory.
