2008 community Grant recipients
Grants from Community Funds
- Boys & Girls Club of Cumberland County was awarded $18,000 to support after-school programming that includes academic assistance, character and leadership development for 300 underserved youth.
- Cumberland County Schools was awarded $15,000 for the PRIDE PACT Leadership Academy, to improve math and literacy proficiency for girls from schools with high poverty rates and low student achievement.
- Cumberland County Schools was awarded $5,000 for Gray’s Creek High School to promote interest and completion towards A+ certification and to provide involvement in technology-based field trips, camps and events.
- Cumberland Interfaith Hospitality Network was awarded $25,000 for the Genesis Program providing additional housing that will reduce the number of working families on homeless waiting lists.
- National Organization on Disability was awarded $20,000 for the Army Wounded Warrior (AW2) Careers Project to help severely wounded veterans transition to new career opportunities and have self sufficient and fulfilling lives.
- Nonprofit Leadership Award was given to Joseph Boles of The CARE Clinic to recognize exemplary nonprofit leadership by an individual board member and to recognize the very important role of “board member” in an organization. The Foundation granted $1,000 for staff training and board development to The CARE Clinic.
- North Carolina Center for Public Policy Research was awarded $10,000 for a technology initiative that will provide internet access to 30 years of public policy research with data specific to Cumberland County that will inform and guide local leaders.
- Partnership for Children of Cumberland County was awarded $50,000 to improve the lives of children and families by convening service providers, developing a strategic planning process and data system, and building collaborative change in the system.
- Vander Civic Association was awarded $10,000 to develop a neglected property into a new park and community resource.
Endowment Challenges :
- The Cape Fear Botanical Garden will receive $1:$1 matching funds up to $50,000 for gifts to the Cape Fear Botanical Garden Children’s Fund, which endows support for the garden’s programming for children. The Lilly Endowment Challenge grant is made possible by the Ashton W. Lilly Fund for Philanthropy.
- The Fayetteville Symphony Orchestra was awarded The Lilly Endowment Challenge in 2007. Through December 2009, gifts to the Fayetteville Symphony Endowment will be matched $1:$1 up to $25,000 and will help secure the long-term future of quality symphonic music in our community. This grant was made possible by the Ashton W. Lilly Fund for Philanthropy.
Multi-year grants in progress:
- Balkcum Scholars Awards – $80,000 in college scholarships for students in memory of Vienna and John Balkcum.
- Cape Fear Botanical Gardens- $120,000 over three years, awarded in 2006 for the construction of the Visitors Pavilion Complex. A fundraising match is required.
- Child Advocacy Center - $45,000 over three years, awarded in 2007 to provide operating support and protect children from child abuse and neglect.
- Hispanics in Philanthropy – $10,000 towards a three year grant of $30,000 for strengthening Latino community organizations.
- Summertime Kids Grant program – $20,000 for summer enrichment programs for almost 1,000 youth in need in Cumberland County.
- Sustainable Sandhills - $30,000 over two years, awarded in 2007 to support general operations that will coordinate social, environmental and economic resources to promote community sustainability. A fundraising match is required.
