Foundation Supports Hurricane Matthew Relief

On Saturday, October 8, 2016, Hurricane Matthew caused devastating floods in Fayetteville and Cumberland County, NC. On October 10, 2016, Cumberland Community Foundation created the Giving Together Hurricane Matthew Relief Fund to raise support for disaster relief and recovery in Cumberland County, NC.

CCF raised $150,000 in matching funds and offered dollar-for-dollar matches of all gifts up to the $150,000. The matching funds were provided by CCF’s unrestricted endowments ($50,000), the William R. Kenan, Jr. Charitable Trust ($50,000), and The JP Riddle Charitable Foundation ($50,000). The JP Riddle Charitable Foundation gift was made as a challenge to those in the construction industry including homebuilders, realtors, suppliers, subcontractors, and developers.

Generous gifts came in from near and far. As of 2/28/17, total gifts reached $379,533 including the matching funds. The largest gifts came from two anonymous couples, Fayetteville New Car Dealer’s Association ($48,000), H&H Homes ($26,000), North Carolina Community Foundation Disaster Relief Fund ($15,000), Highland Paving Company ($10,000), and Southern Glazer’s Wine and Spirits Charitable Fund ($10,000). Hundreds of individuals gave gifts ranging from $25 to $10,000.

The first grants paid out went directly to charitable organizations providing emergency relief services.  Going forward, grants will be paid in collaboration with the Cumberland Disaster Recovery Coalition case management system and partnerships.
