Food manufacturers across the country donate their products, but food banks must cover the expense of transportation. It costs an average of $600 for Second Harvest Food Bank to bring a tractor-trailer load of food to Fayetteville. Costs include fuel, truck rental, insurance and a driver, and each tractor-trailer can hold about 33,000 pounds. The goal of the 1 Million Pound campaign is to raise money to bring an additional 31 tractor-trailers of food. The food is then distributed through the 260 food pantries supplied by Second Harvest Food Bank. In total, they provide an estimated 800,000 meals.
