How to Apply for Scholarships

How to Apply

Cumberland Community Foundation’s scholarship applications are completed and submitted online.

Students meeting the general criteria below are eligible to apply:

  • Resident of Cumberland County (unless otherwise noted in the scholarship description)
  • Students who will attend college, university, vocational or technical institutions as a full-time student in the fall or within six months following the award
  • Academic achievement and potential as indicated by class rank, GPA, and/or standardized test scores (SAT or ACT)
  • Financial need (unless otherwise noted in the scholarship description) – See below

Financial Aid Information
Many CCF scholarships are based on financial need and require information from the applicant’s Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) form. Your parents/guardian will need to complete the form in advance of the scholarship deadline to ensure that your Student Aid Report (SAR) results are available for submission with your application. Click here for more FAFSA information or to file your FAFSA on line.

If available, a copy of your financial award letter from the college or university is also required.

Application Instructions
1. Gather the following required materials

  • FAFSA Electronic Student Aid Report – Must be in PDF format.
  • School transcript – PDF or scanned format
  • References – Names and email addresses of the guidance counselors, teachers and/or administrators, employers or volunteer coordinators who will write letters of recommendation for you. No relatives can be used.

2. Complete the General Application
Once you have set up your student account, please sign in to complete the General Application.

Please answer the questions carefully and thoroughly. If any required questions are not completed, your application will not be considered.

You may work on your application over time. To save your work each time you exit, click the “Save and Keep Editing” button.

Do not attach information directly from a website. We are unable to see it and your application will be counted as incomplete.  This could include Google Docs or information directly from your online student account (such as transcript not in pdf or scanned form).

To submit your application, click the “Finish and Continue” button. If all required questions have been answered, you will see a green check mark. You now may proceed to the next step. If you missed a questions, you will be prompted to complete it and resubmit your General Application.

3. Apply for Scholarships
After you complete and submit your General Application, click on “View Opportunities” to review the recommended scholarships that match up with the information included in your submitted General Application. This does not mean that you are qualified to apply for every scholarship listed as a recommended scholarship. You will note that each recommended scholarship listed has at least one additional question. Before you apply for a specific scholarship, please review the qualifications and any restrictions to ensure that you qualify. You will need to complete the additional questions for each scholarship that you apply for.

Remember: You will not be able to change responses or upload additional information after the application deadline.

4. Manage references and applications
Review your Student Account periodically to check the status of your applications and manage your references. An email is sent to your references with instructions on how they can upload their reference letters. It is your responsibility to make sure they do it on time. Click the ‘Manage References’ button to check if your references have uploaded their letters. You can click the ‘Resend’ button if you’d like to remind them (this sends a second email to the references with instructions). We encourage you to apply early. An application is not complete until ALL materials are submitted.

5. Selections and Awards
When final selections are made an email notification will be sent. If you do not receive notification, check the status of your application on Student Account online.

If you are an award recipient, log on to your Student Account to accept the award. You will be given further instructions through your Student Account.

6. Set Up Your Account

You will be prompted to enter your email address and create a password.  Once you submit your information, you will receive an email confirming your account and access to the general application.  Be sure to check your spam folder if you do not see this email in your inbox.
